With his gestures and facial expressions alone, the mime Marcel Marceau captured audiences around the globe for decades. But the tragic background behind his work has remained hidden for a long time. THE ART OF SILENCE sheds new light on his life and unique art form, with his father and companions keep alive to this day.

Swiss filmmaker Maurizius Staerkle Drux grew up with a deaf father. With THE ART OF SILENCE he reflects on parts of his own life story.

Director´s note
I grew up with a deaf father. From an early age, my visual attention was greatly nurtured, because my life sometimes resembled a silent movie. I myself am not deaf, I can hear, and at an early age, I started creating music. Even as an adult, I am still stying to figur out what images best express my wishes, my fear and my queries, so that a deaf person can understand them. Perhaps for the reasons, I chose filmmaking, a synthesis of image and sound.

With THE ART OF SILECE, I reflect a part of my own life story. In doing so, I go beyond what is hidden behind Bip´s, alias Marceau´s white mask. The idea is to depict his work for within a contemporary perspective. Where does his artistic legacy stad and how are his descendants dealing with is? During the making of the film, I spent time with the Marceau family, but also with friends and companions who have carried on Marceau´s art formin their own way. In the process, I realized one thing that they have in common: they all draw their art from silence. And the strength to use it to change their lives.

Maurizius Staerkle Drux was born in Cologne in 1988 and grew up in Zurich. In 2012 he graduated in film directiting at the ZHdK, specializing in sound design. His debut film THE BÖHM FAMILY – CONCRETE LOVE was shown in over 30 countries and won multiple awards. Since 2017, he has been imparting his passion for film and sound, as a lecturer at the Zurich University of the Art.

Jag växte upp med en döv pappa. Mitt öga för det visuella formades från en tidig ålder, då mitt liv mång gånger liknade en stumfilm. Jag är själv inte döv, jag kan höra och började tidigt att skapa musik. Som vuxen utforskar jag fortfarande hur jag bäst kan kommunicera mina drömmar, rädslor och frågor så att en döv person kan förstå dem. Kanske är det därför jag jobbar med film, en sammanställning av bild och ljud.

Med THE ART OF SILENCE reflekterar jag kring delar av min egen livshistoria. I utforskandet gräver jag under Bip´s (Marceaus) vita mask. Idén är att porträttera hans verk från ett samtida perspektiv. Var startar hans artistiska arv och hur tar hans ättlingar hand om det? Under skapandet av filmen spenderade jag tid med Marceaus familj och med hans kompanjoner som har burit med sig Marceaus konstform på deras egna vis. I processen, har jag insett att de alla har en sak gemensamt: de drar alla från konsten av tystnad och styrkan i att använda det för att förändra liv.

Maurizius Staerkle Drux föddes i Cologne år 1988 och växte upp i Zurich. 2012 tog han sin examen i filmregi med fokus på ljud design från ZHdK. Hans debuxilm THE BÖHM FAMILY – CONCRETE LOVE har visats i över 30 länder och vunnit flera priser. Sedan 2017 har han förmedlat sin passion för film och ljud som en föreläsare vid Zurich University of the Art.
